The chronic task of sorting: information flows and liquid labour

I often think about the impact technology has on my health. My physical, mental and spiritual health, as well as how it influences my relationships and my overall lifestyle.

Although technology, undeniably has an impact on all aspects of life, the area that seems to be most focused on is how it affects work life. Greg, 2013 says that now days employees often blur the lines between leisure, work and home and that this has made it hard to recognise what counts as work. This is also a contribution as to why working from home has become a lot more common.

Mitew, 2020 also notes that there is a cost of controlling a networks interactions with a complex and changing environment.

“The dynamics of a workplace are being reshaped by the ongoing relationships between networks”

Peter Bradwell and Richard Reeves 2008

  5. Hi there Erin, awesome blog post entry!

Technology is continually transforming, changing and expanding. I couldn’t envision a world without technology or my mobile phone. Smartphones make communication faster and more accessible. Despite the fact it has incredibly improved our lives, it has additionally negatively influenced our physical and emotional wellbeing through the ways we connect. In regards to innovation in the workplace, it is a major concern as it is a tool of distraction and most of the time instead of working/studying we are utilising our favourite social media apps or messaging a friend. This can prompt an absence of focus and diminishes work efficiency. A fascinating fact I discovered was that companies that restricted text messaging during working hours had employees morals suffer leading to even worse productivity.

Work-based applications on smartphones can expand proficiency and productivity. This technology expands the workplace environment where an employee happens to be. This adaptability allows more employees to work at home remotely. They can likewise work cooperatively with others. This constant accessibility and adaptable hours, however, can dissolve a work-life balance creating an “always-on” mentality/attitude resulting in increased stress and burnout. It’s interesting to perceive how the modern work environment is no longer limited to one physical space. The cloud, AI and smartphones are creating a new kind of work environment that can be accessed anywhere at any time.

I found the Youtube link engaging to watch. You have provided some great information, references and quotes connected this weeks lecture topic in an innovative, simplistic manner. I’m interested to see more of your blogs, keep up the wonderful work 🙂

  6. After reading your blog, one question comes to my mind. Does technology actually improve our quality of life? With technology rapidly transforming society, people today rely too much on technology. Because of this new dependence, we are losing the ability to take care of ourselves in an all-natural way. Such as GPS systems, GPA has changed the way people travel. People nowadays can’t even read a map anymore. However, Technology has advanced into many areas of our lives, these changes not only lead to social progress, and at the same time also caused another problem.
